A new initiative has been launched in the UK to support British composers, allowing the public to connect with them directly and contribute through one-time or monthly donations to sustain their work.
The initiative, titled “Music Patron,” was founded by investor, philanthropist, and musician Anthony Bolton. Inspired by platforms like Patreon and online crowdfunding models, Bolton devised this idea to address the unique financial challenges faced by composers. Recent statistics reveal that 53% of composers earn less than £10,000 a year from their work, highlighting the need for innovative solutions to support artists and their creations. Monthly donations can start from as little as £3, with all proceeds going directly to the composers. The selection of composers is overseen by a panel of music industry experts.
Prominent supporters of Music Patron include Dame Judith Weir, Master of the Queen’s Music, and Sir Simon Rattle, the renowned conductor. Sir Simon Rattle commented, “I believe in supporting the future of music. Music Patron is a new and important way of doing that. It gives ordinary people the chance to directly support a composer, provide them with impactful income, and help create new music.”
Music Patron backs a wide range of creative work—including classical, folk, jazz, electronic, dance music, musical theatre, singer-songwriter genres, and sound installations.
Establishing such online platforms within Iran could inject fresh energy and motivation into the composer community, particularly among young artists. It would enrich Iran’s musical landscape, give greater visibility to local talents, and offer music lovers the opportunity to support the creators they admire. This initiative may also prompt a rethink of current cultural policies, encouraging more nuanced and modern approaches to arts and music support.
